I love Food, But….
I love food. Food is pleasure. Food brings comfort. Food is a way to flirt with others. Food is creativity. Maybe it is a Taurus thing, but I simply love food. :)
I grew up vegan, but much later, I found out that I was allergic to animal products. That might be why I grew up vegan. I think we were vegan until I was about 8, and then we became vegetarian because it was too expensive to keep it up. I was raised in Suriname, and my parents would import things from Holland because meat substitutes and similar products were not common in Suriname. It was very weird to be vegan and live in Suriname.
I think I was about 9 when we started adding cheese and fish to our diet.I was raised with the understanding that not all foods are aligned with your highest good. So, in general, we ate rice and vegetables with tempeh, tofu or soy blocks.
But when I started living on my own, I was in a rebellious mood, so I ate whatever I liked, including pork, lots of sugary stuff and processed food.
I used to choose food based on what was available and the mood I was in.
Yep, I was an emotional eater as well. I would eat at random times of the day, even when I wasn't hungry.
Back then, I was working in the hospitality sector, so it would be normal to eat a big mac & cheese with fries at 02:30 AM.
But it did not matter how crazy I would go with food. I always loved vegetables. I would sometimes just randomly crave broccoli or spinach
In 2022, I started to feel that it was time to change. I felt that I should eat a bit more consciously. I was getting older, and I noticed that my body processed food differently.
After a few detours, I started rediscovering the world of cooking without meat products and eating less processed food & sugar, but this time through my own lens. See my post (Redefining What Food Means To Me)
At the beginning of this journey, I started noticing videos of people talking about food and how it affects us. One of them was Dr. Yahki Awakened. He has a passionate way of teaching about the power of food, its effects and how we can align with our highest good through food. I find that there is a lot of truth in what he shares.
I felt inspired and started detoxing because, in the previous years, I had been drinking a lot of alcohol and eating a lot of porks of other types of meat.
Of course, I eased into it. I first stopped eating meat, processed foods & sugary foods. I focused more on home cooking and eating a variety of vegetables. Then I slowly moved to soups, salads, fruits and juices.
For three months, I only had fruits and fruit juices, which I made myself with my juicer.
After the 3 month detox period, I thought to myself, “Okay, we are going to continue on this path and become more mindful of how I eat.”
Then came 2023. I moved from The Hague to Amsterdam. In that household, they ate differently from me, and that is where I learned the true meaning of discipline. When you are in your own space, it can be easier to be “disciplined” by keeping certain foods out of your house.
When you are in an environment where everything is accessible, that is when real discipline comes into play.
I noticed that I was not disciplined. In the beginning, I was saying, “I am vegetarian. I do not eat everything.” But everything was accessible. Slowly, I became accustomed to their way of eating, their eating style and their eating patterns.
I did that for a few years and could feel my body screaming to me:
“We want something different.”
I was mainly craving vegetables, Fruit & natural homemade
So in 2026, I decided to change my diet because I had reached a stage where I genuinely felt that my body was inflamed. I know that inflammation can also be caused by stress, and I was in a very stressful situation, both personally and career-wise.
It was time for a Big Clean-up!
In the beginning phase of my detoxification, I did notice that I had not been as disciplined as I was during my first big detox period in 2022.
I think, subconsciously, I was actually telling myself that I should not focus only on temporary detoxing. I should focus on changing my lifestyle, my perception, and being more intentional about what I consume, the way I eat and my overall eating patterns.
So I am not just detoxing. I am in a phase of changing the way I see & experience food.
It's not only about loving to eat, but also about using food as nourishment for body & soul.
And I have a feeling that the love I express through food will continue to expand in more ways than one.
Thank you for reading & see you in my next post.
Signed with love,
